| Beriberi is a vitamin deficiency disease, caused by a lack of vitamin B1 (thiamine). Since thiamine is essential for proper carbohydrate and fat metabolism and for normal functioning of enzymes and nervous tissue, beriberi results in neurological and gastrointestinal disorders. |
